Holocaust (Shoah) Knowledge Exchange Day

On October 31, 2016, the Concentus Citizenship Education Foundation, in partnership with Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission and the Saskatchewan Education Leadership Unit (SELU), is offering a one-day knowledge exchange for teachers.  At this event, teachers will experience the most effective strategies to meet specific outcomes by teaching events of the Holocaust (Shoah) and by having students understand the impact of the Holocaust on the world.

Goals

At the end of the day, participants will have specific Holocaust (Shoah) education information, meet a network of supportive educators, develop a plan to guide their teaching experiences and be able to host a Holocaust (Shoah) education event at their school or in their school division.

  • Why is the Holocaust important?
  • How was the Holocaust humanly possible?
  • What did Holocaust survivors experience before, during, and after the Holocaust?
  • What was the world’s response to the Holocaust during and after the Second World War?
  • What is the state of White Supremacy and Antisemitism today?

Holocaust Education

  • How does one teach the Holocaust, an event of such magnitude, to students?
  • What are the “Enduring Understandings” that students should take away?
  • What resources effectively support Holocaust and Human Rights Education?
  • How do I find authentic and vetted resources?
  • Why is it important to effectively use survivor testimony? How do we most effectively use survivor testimony? (in person, video, memoirs)
  • How do we connect Holocaust education and its lessons to other genocides?

Teachers will

  • Listen to survivor, Felicia Carmelly, and hear the story of her experiences.
  • Learn from other educators who have experience hosting Holocaust knowledge events with large groups of students.
  • Explore vetted classroom resources, including the Citizenship Education Pedagogy, that support student understandings.
  • Work with other professionals to determine how best to use the resources in your instruction.
  • Return to your classroom, school and school division with specific Holocaust education information, a network of supportive educators and a plan to guide your instruction.
